Photo Challenge: Split Second Story

Posted on Updated on

I first saw Fayetteville, NC in the 1960s when I reported to Ft. Bragg for Special Forces training. Hay Street in the downtown center was a strip of bars, clubs and dives that had given the city the nickname ‘Fayettenam,’ a play on Vietnam. It wasn’t a place you’d want to take your family – unless you wanted to get rid of them. I was recently back in Fayetteville for another visit to a much-expanded Ft. Bragg – this time as a civilian consultant – and when I went downtown, I was blown away. Here’s what Hay Street looks like circa 2014.

Sidewalk cafes and street musicians have replaced the dives of the past. It's not Fayette-nam anymore.
