Review of ‘Found Near Water’

Posted on

Christine Emmett was a successful psychiatrist until she realized that she couldn’t do it anymore. She quit in order to concentrate on being a mother, but then when her daughter is killed in an accident for which she holds herself responsible, she decided to get back into helping others in order to keep from going completely bonkers.

Found Near Water a first novel by Katherine Hayton is a taut thriller about Christine, the members of her support group – all mothers who have lost their children for one reason or another – and her work with the Christchurch police force, aiding crime victims. Things come to a head for her when she’s asked to consult on a case involving a woman in the hospital who claims her daughter’s missing. Hayton takes the reader back and forth from the case of the missing girl to the back stories of the members of Christine’s support group, weaving seemingly unrelated threads together in a story that will chill you to the very marrow of your bones.

Masterfully written, the characters are fully developed and believable. Once you start reading this book, you’ll not be able to put it down. I received a free review copy. I give Found Near Water four stars.
